The Flash is a 2023 American superhero film based on the DC character of the same name. Produced by Warner Bros. Pictures, DC Studios, Double Dream and Disco Factory and distributed by Warner Bros. Pictures, it is the thirteenth installment in the DC Extended Universe (DCEU). Directed by Andy Muschietti from a script by Christina Hodson, the film stars Ezra Miller as Barry Allen/The Flash alongside Sasha Calle, Michael Shannon, Ron Livingston, Maribel Verdú, Kiersey Clemons, Antje Traue and Michael Keaton.In the film, Barry travels back in time to prevent his mother’s death, which has unforeseen consequences. The development of a Flash based feature film started in the late 80’s and in 2014 several writers and directors were involved. Several directors became involved with the film in the years that followed, with Seth Grahame-Smith, Rick Famuyiwa and duo John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein leaving the project due to creative differences. Pussyetti and Hodson joined in July 2019 and pre-production began in January 2020.The film is inspired by the storyline of the Flashpoint (2011) comic, with other DC characters such as Supergirl Calle and Ben Affleck, and the Keaton version of Batman. Principal photography took place at Warner Bros. Studios in Leavesden and elsewhere in the UK from April to October 2021. The Flash premiered on June 12, 2023 at Grauman’s Chinese Theater in Los Angeles and hit theaters on June 16 in the United States after numerous delays due to director changes, the COVID-19 pandemic, post-production bankruptcies and the controversy surrounding Meunier. The film received mixed reviews from critics, with praise for the humor, direction, and score, but criticism for the script, the third act, and the visual effects.The film grossed $245 million worldwide from a production budget of $200-220 million and is considered one of the biggest box-office hits of all time, due in part to the Miller controversy and Warner Bros. posting a loss of up to to US$200 million.
